Rivanna Authorities reduces reportable injuries through focus on risk management

The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority provides recycling, solid waste, and household hazardous waste disposal services to residents in the City of Charlottesville and County of Albemarle.

In 2018, the authority found itself significantly above the industry standard for its reportable incident rates and took action.

“In 2018, under the leadership of Bill Moyer, Rivanna created a five-year strategic plan,” said Safety Manager Elizabeth Coleman.  “That included a goal of providing high-quality services through efficiency, reliability, and safe practices.

The authority focused on updating their safety manual, increasing training, and utilizing VRSA resources such as the Risk Management Grant program to purchase equipment to aid in reducing injuries.

“VRSA is much more than an insurance company – they partner with you in helping you and your staff to stay safe,” said Coleman.

The result has been an 82.4 percent reduction in reportable incident rates over the course of three years. Learn more in our member spotlight video below.
