Did you know that the Alexandria Library was the site of the earliest library sit-in held in 1939? The 1939 sit-in on Alexandria’s own Queen Street was celebrated by the Alexandria Library throughout 2014 through events honoring the 75th anniversary of the peaceful protest.

One of the nation’s most little-known historical events involved leadership from native Alexandrian, attorney Samuel W. Tucker, and five young African American men who demonstrated an act of civil disobedience at the Barrett Branch after being denied library cards. The commemorative events at Alexandria Library locations centered around civil rights, human rights and the African American diaspora. Honoring the sit-in gives the institution the opportunity to shed light on a civil rights act that took place more than 15 years before the Civil Rights Movement.

“The boldness and orchestration of the sit-in was unparalleled by anything else at the time,” said anniversary co-chair, Alexandria civil rights legend Ferdinand Day, who played a pivotal role in Alexandria’s school integration during the 1960s. “Its place in history is not just an achievement for African Americans—it paved the way for providing free access of the library to the entire public.”

Did you know that the Pamunkey Regional Library is named after the Pamunkey River, a 90-mile river that begins 20 miles north of Richmond, Virginia,  where it joins the North and South Anna rivers. The Pamunkey River goes on to divide Hanover and King William counties – both served by the library system.

Libraries provide their communities with so much more than books. They host a variety of events for citizens of all ages throughout the year that encourage not only reading – but a love of learning.

A recent Maker Fair at the library was hosted by the local 4-H chapter and involved kids in building structures using marshmallows and toothpicks. Lots of fun was had and marshmallows eaten.

The Hanover Branch Library opened on October 22, 1942 as one of 11 libraries donated to rural Virginia counties by Mr. David K. E. Bruce, an American diplomat and politician. The library was built to resemble 18th century architecture to complement the historic Hanover Courthouse next door.
