2012 VML Insurance Programs Annual Meeting

The 2012 VML Insurance Programs Annual Meeting was held Friday, May 18 at The Place at Innsbrook.  This year’s meeting was one of the largest ever with nearly 140 members registering to attend.

Presenter Velma Johnson with Alliant discussed cyber security including how breaches occur, costs associated, mitigation strategies, and more. VML Insurance Programs provides cyber security coverage to eligible members.

Rick Lucas, president of Lucas & Kite, PLC. Discussed workers’ compensation – focusing on common misconceptions; for example all incidents that occur on the job are not covered under the Virginia Worker’s Compensation Act.  He also discussed employee – employer relationships, unexplained accidents and injuries caused by forces of nature.

Following lunch – featuring 14 flavors of Cakes by Graham, VML Insurance Programs’ Director of Human Resources Tina Stevens presented on The Face of Employment Liability, discussing real cases of employment discrimination, hostile work environments, retaliation, and real Equal Employment Opportunity Commission cases.

In between VMLIP Board Chairman Peter Stephenson presided over the annual business meeting and presented risk management awards.  In his report Stephenson noted that equity in the pool had increased by 5.5 percent from the prior year.

“Equity is an important barometer in gauging the financial strength of an insurance pool – it provides greater flexibility in setting rates, determining reinsurance retention levels, and expanding coverages,” said Stephenson.

“In 2011 we utilized these strengths to provide two new coverages and an important new service to our program – all at no additional cost to eligible members.”

Those included cyber liability and pollution coverages, and business continuity services provided through Agility Recovery Solutions.

Awards

Each year VMLIP presents Risk Management Performance Awards to members who have been selected based on their loss ratio over a five-year period, achieving 100 percent completion of Risk Management Guidelines applicable to their tier, and proactive effort towards reaching their risk management goals.

Last year VMLIP began offering recipients a certificate reserving Risk Management Grant funding for their entity for the duration of the grant funding year.  The amount is based on the entity’s tier level.

As grant funding is frequently distributed quickly to members, this reservation allows award recipients time to determine their needs and make their requests knowing the funds are being held for them, as appreciation for their dedication toward risk management.
