Virginia Unpaid Organ Donor Leave

Effective July 1, 2023, Virginia has a new law mandating employers provide unpaid organ donor leave.

Under the new law, Virginia employers with at least 50 employees must provide unpaid leave to organ donors, including bone marrow donors. Employees are eligible for this leave if they were employed by their current employer for at least 12 months prior and worked at least 1,250 hours in the preceding 12 months. Be sure your procedures and policies are updated to include this new law.

As part of VRSA’s Human Resources Consulting service, a sample personnel policy manual is available to eligible members at no additional cost. The manual has been recently updated to reflect this new policy and is available on the HR Services page.
