“This award really belongs to our public works fire and police employees,” said City of Poquoson Assistant Finance Director Jessica Davis as they received their Gold Star recognition for this quarter.
This quarter, VRSA recognizes both the City of Poquoson and Poquoson City Schools as two of the more than 100 members to make the Gold Star List. The list is published quarterly to recognize members who have reported their workers’ compensation claims within three days of injury.
“They are the ones that really have earned this – the ones who process and report claims very quickly – sometimes VRSA is telling me about these accidents,” said Davis.
Making the Gold Star List signifies that a member is not only reporting but also treating employees in a timely manner from the date of their injury.
Timely reporting and treatment help make things go right for both the injured employee – with quicker treatment – and their employer – with less staff out as a result of injury.
For Poquoson City Schools Human Resources Coordinator Debra Bunting, making the Gold Star List shows that the system is doing the best for its injured employees. The school division has made the list every quarter since 1993, with an average reporting time of just 1.74 over the past 30 years.
“Working with VRSA, making those claims run as smoothly as possible, getting information in a timely and fast manner so we can get employees back to work – it all comes back to making things right for the schools and the children that we serve,” said Bunting.
Late reporting is a major cost driver in workers’ compensation claims, and timely reporting helps keep costs under control and helps injured employees begin their recovery process sooner.
