Virginia’s Championship City: The City of Salem generates revenue through hosting championship games

The City of Salem, Virginia’s Championship City, has hosted hundreds of championship games of all types through its parks and recreation department.

“We are not a normal parks and rec department – we function as a traditional and then slash, a sports commission,” said John Shaner, director of parks and recreation for the City of Salem.

The city hosts NCAA national championships, VHSL high school state championships, wrestling matches, speech and debate competitions, lacrosse, soccer, pickleball, and more. The city’s Moyer Sports Complex was recently renovated and is now booked for events through 2028. This is in addition to the events the department hosts for their community.

The revenue generated from hosting championships supports the city’s general fund. However, having the right protections in place is essential to protect the city’s assets. That’s where VRSA’s broadest and dependable coverages come in.

“You all have been wonderful to work with. Having all these new people coming to the city, making sure we have the correct insurance,” said Shaner.

In fact, VRSA also provides contract review service at no additional cost to ensure that those using member facilities or assets have adequate insurance, and by providing insurance requirement recommendations.

While many of these groups bring their own certificates of insurance to the city, for members with groups hosting events on their property who need insurance, VRSA can help.

VRSA offers access to event coverage that organizations or citizens utilizing the facility – “tenant users” can purchase to protect against bodily injury or property damage arising out of the use of local government premises by tenant users. This is just another way VRSA offers broad protections to protect member property and their budget. Learn more about Virginia’s Championship City in the video above!
