Member risk management spotlight

VRSA members have been busy training their staff on a variety of risk management issues and exposures. As partners in risk management, VRSA staff have partnered with members to provide much of this training throughout the state. Read more below!

VWWAA

VRSA Safety Consultant Edward Shelton presented on OSHA at the Virginia Water and Waste Authorities Association (VWWAA) conference this spring.

Reasonable Suspicion and Emotional Intelligence training

VRSA Director of Education and Training Thomas Bullock provided Reasonable Suspicion and Emotional Intelligence training for the Virginia Association of Regional Jails’ annual conference held at The Founder’s Inn.

OSHA At A Glance

VRSA Senior Safety Consultant Fonda Craig provided OSHA At A Glance training to the Town of Pearisburg.

Emergency Vehicle Operations and Liability training

VRSA Director of Education and Training Thomas Bullock provided training to new police recruits at the Crater Criminal Justice Academy. This class is meant to heighten the awareness of the dangers of emergency vehicle operations and how decisions to drive too fast can have life changing consequences.
Driving Simulator Training
VRSA staff provided defensive driving training via driving simulator to employees of the City of Suffolk.

Reasonable Suspicion and Emotional Intelligence training

VRSA Director of Education and Training Thomas Bullock provided Reasonable Suspicion and Emotional Intelligence training for Spotsylvania County Public Schools.

Trenching and Excavation and Confined Space Entry Training

In May, Safety Consultant Edward Shelton conducted Confined Space Entry and Trenching and Excavation training with the Town of Vinton’s public works employees.   After the classroom portion of the training, the class went out into the field where Edward demonstrated what to look for when inspecting an excavation for potential cave-in, demonstrated different types of soil tests and demonstrated inspecting the condition of the trench box and other compliance items.  New hires were also shown how to properly set up the tripod and retrieval and the correct way to test the atmosphere before entering a confined space.

Risk Management Leadership Blueprint training

The first of four Risk Management Leadership Blueprint trainings was held in Farmville. Training topics included public officials liability, ethical leadership and attracting and retaining employees.

Mental Health in the Workplace training

VRSA Director of Education and Training Thomas Bullock presented at a Mental Health in the Workplace training in the Town of South Boston. Bullock presented on helping colleagues recognize the signs of emotional distress in one another and refer people to appropriate help.

VRSA Senior Safety Consultant Fonda Craig provided OSHA At A Glance training for staff at Alexandria Renew.

Hazard Recognition Training

VRSA Senior Safety Consultant Fonda Craig presented hazard recognition training to staff at Alexandria Renew Enterprises during safety awareness month.

Bedford Regional Water Authority

Safety Consultant Edward Shelton attended training at the Bedford Regional Water Authority, where authority staff recognized Trench Safety Stand Down Week by taking time to identify hazards involving working in and around trenches. Training consisted of classroom and hands-on training.
