Last summer, VRSA launched the GOAL Campaign, taking a simple adage that the trucking industry uses – get out and look – and applying it to any situation where members can prevent and reduce losses.
The campaign is focused on six key areas -automobile, buildings, job sites, facilities, equipment, and documents. Since its launch, members have chosen to begin implementing this campaign in their risk management programs, including Hanover County and Hanover County Public Schools.
“I thought the program was a very good way to get people to think about the risks and hazards they encounter in the workplace every day,” said Safety and Risk Manager for Hanover County and Hanover County Public Schools, Matt Phillips.
“One of the things we talk about with employees is to look at the workplace like it’s the first time – what has changed overnight, what has changed over time, what hazards could have possibly been introduced – and I think this is an excellent tool to help reinforce that message.”
Phillips is working to implement the campaign throughout the county and school division. Materials available for VRSA members have been updated with Hanover logos and information, and are being shared in new employee orientation, through pocket cards, focus topics, toolbox talks, and more.
He hopes the campaign will serve as a reminder for staff to ask themselves important questions.
“Am I rushed? Distracted? Scan for hazards – if something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t right,” said Phillips. “Let’s put into place corrective actions that would prevent something from occurring.”
