Matt Phillips with Hanover County and Hanover County Public Schools named Public Risk Manager of the Year!

The Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) has named Matt Phillips Public Risk Manager of the Year!

“We don’t necessarily do what we do for the purpose of being honored,” said Phillips. “But it’s a nice acknowledgement that over a 20-something-year career, the things you are doing are making a difference.”

Phillips says that whether working for the private or public sector, his goals have been the same.

“If you are on the job, you have the right to have a safe and healthy workplace,” said Phillips. “Everyone wants to go home to their families at the end of the day.”

Since coming to the county, Phillips has worked to strengthen relationships between risk management and departments, reconfigure the county’s safety steering team, and bring more of a focus on data and trends to the county’s incident review team so they can determine where to intervene to reduce losses.
