The Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority, or VPPSA, operates 16 transfer centers throughout its service area where residents can drop off waste to be handled. With a variety of vehicles entering and exiting these facilities daily, two major hazards for attendants and equipment were identified – speed and visibility.
“At this site, traffic comes off at a high rate of speed, where it’s 55 miles per hour,” said Brays Fork Convenience Center Attendant Brian McKellar. “If I’m coming outside or any attendants are coming outside, they are coming in real fast, and they may not see us in time to stop.”
McKellar, a member of the VPPSA Safety Committee, suggested the purchase of 6-foot rubber speed bumps to address this hazard, as well as the purchase of 42-inch orange traffic looper cones.
“Newer pick-up trucks that are higher up, when they come in and make that turn, it’s harder for them to see little cones,” said McKeller.
The speed bumps and looper cones were purchased through funding from the VRSA Risk Management Grant program. Learn more about how VPPSA is utilizing these items in the video below.
