The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Underground Storage Tank (UST) program compliance has recently changed.
Effective Oct. 1, 2025, the amount of time given to owners to respond to deficiencies noted by DEQ will differ depending on the severity of the issues found. Previously, owners received six months to resolve deficiencies, no matter the severity.
This may significantly shorten the timeline owners are given for issues to be corrected before they are elevated to formal enforcement actions, such as fines or delivery prohibition.

DEQ hosted a webinar on Sept. 25, available to watch online here, to explain the new process. They have also developed a fact sheet to further explain the changes, as well as a list of compliance actions tank owners must keep in mind.
