Southeastern Public Service Authority uses grants to purchase traffic control arms

The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) is a regional waste authority that handles all the municipal solid waste in the southeastern region of Virginia – including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Isle of Wight, the City of Franklin, and Southampton County.

The authority recently requested VRSA Risk Management Grant assistance to install barrier gates at their Isle of Wight and Chesapeake stations. The request was made so the authority could better control traffic and prevent incidents.

The system that we needed installed at Chesapeake Transfer Station is to control the traffic coming off the exit ramp at the tipping floor,” said SPSA Safety and Risk Manager Michael Pond. “We have trailers and tractor trailers backing off the scale, and while they are backing off the scale, we have citizens coming off the ramp, and it could be a potential hazard for accidents, damage, or someone getting hurt.”

Learn about how the newly installed gates are helping the authority prevent and reduce losses, and how the Risk Management Grant program has inspired them to identify new ways to address risks, in the video below.
