“Most security problems aren’t dramatic,” says VRSA Public Safety Specialist Gary Dillon. “They are small, everyday gaps like a propped door, a burned-out light, or a key nobody can account for, and they add up.”
This is why, in addition to site inspections to help prevent and reduce losses, VRSA staff provide security inspections to help protect citizens and employees. The service is provided by Dillon, who holds the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) certification.
“Through CPTED, I’m able to look at facilities the way someone with a law enforcement perspective would,” said Dillon. “Which means thinking about how a person with bad intentions might see the building.”
Dillon recently conducted a security inspection for the Rappahannock Area ASAP. He made several recommendations, many of which were implemented. Several items were funded through the Risk Management Grant program. Over the last two years, Dillon has provided 14 security inspections across a variety of entity types.
