Before mowing season approaches this spring, it’s important to take the time now to get out and look at your mowing operations. Inspect your mowers, review mowing policies and procedures, and ensure your staff is trained and ready to go.
VRSA staff have put together this quick video to review with staff before the mowing season begins.
- Before mowing, get out and look at your machinery. Check fluids, pulleys, belts, and guards. Check the batteries, guards, and inspect blades to ensure they are sharp – DO NOT reach under equipment unless the engine is off AND the key is removed.
- Inspect the area to be mowed and check for obstructions or hazards that could become projectiles when struck by the mower blade.
- Never fuel a running or hot engine – allow it to cool first. Use only approved safety cans to dispense flammable liquids, and always use a metal funnel when transferring fuel
- Wear close-fitting long pants and a shirt while mowing to reduce the potential for clothing to be caught in moving parts.
- Utilize personal protective equipment, including sturdy leather shoes, eye and hearing protection, gloves, and high visibility tops.
- Start the mower from the driver’s seat, and only when the transmission is in neutral and the brake is on. If the equipment doesn’t sound like it is running properly, turn it off and inspect for possible causes.
- Mow medians and high-traffic areas at their least busy times, such as mid-morning, if possible.
- When mowing on slopes, move up and down the slopes, rather than horizontally. Follow the mower manufacturer’s designated maximum safe slope – this accounts for the stability of the equipment on different grades.
- Do not mow on slopes when the grass is wet.
- Never dismount a running motor.
- When performing maintenance, ensure the mower is shut down, and the key is removed from the ignition.
- Perform routine maintenance using the manufacturer’s recommendations as a guide.
