The VRSA Members’ Supervisory Board allocates $400,000 in Risk Management Grant funds each year back to our member communities to assist them in preventing and reducing losses. Last year, VRSA provided nearly $40,000 in funds for members to attend continuing professional education and training.
Last year, we provided nearly $40,000 in funds for members to attend training such as the Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management at Virginia Tech; the University of Virginia’s Leading, Educating, and Developing program; the Senior Executive Institute; and the Virginia Women’s Municipal Leadership Institute.
Hillsville Town Manager LeAnna Surratt recently participated in the Virginia Women’s Municipal Leadership Institute.
“There’s a variety of classes that are relevant in anyone’s career,” said Surratt. “They do a good job of including everyone no matter what level of management you are in.”
Surratt says the network she established during the program has already benefitted the town.
“We had a tight-knit group in our cohort and everyone was very sharing and we all experienced the same things in local government,” said Surratt. “The roundtable discussions after classes were almost more valuable than the classes themselves, but of course, the classes are what stimulated those conversations.”
