Use of Force Assessment and Risk Management requires an understanding of many factors. Supervisors need the skill and ability to minimize and reduce risk associated with use of force encounters. This course focuses on use of force assessment and risk management by instructors and supervisors.

Understanding and applying the Four Elements of Reasonable Force — knowledge, skills, decision-making, and documentation are given. “Root cause” analysis skills are provided to differentiate between symptoms and causes. This course breaks down decision-making and documentation into processes that can be evaluated objectively.

The design of this course improves instructor and supervisor risk management against failing to train and supervise in both the training and field environments. The course provides the basis for evaluating force incident risk in criminal/civil for incidents as well as employment, decision-making, and stress management

DCJS in-service credit for this course is pending approval.
