Day In The Life of City of Charlottesville Risk Manager Philip Spence

What is a day in the life of a risk manager like? Well, there’s no such thing as a typical day, says City of Charlottesville Risk Manager Philip Spence.

“A typical day for me, and this probably goes for risk managers across the country – no two days are the same,” says Spence.

Like the morning Spence found someone had installed a seesaw into a tree stump in the city mall overnight. After confirming the seesaw was not installed by the city, Spence and City of Charlottesville Centralized Safety Coordinator Algreatus “Gator” Batton stood guard until maintenance came to remove the device.

“We had to fend off some children and people asking who put it up,” said Spence. “We were called the no-fun police but that’s just the way it goes.”
