One year of the Get Out and Look (GOAL) campaign!

One year ago, VRSA announced the GOAL campaign in the Pooling Matters Summer 2025 edition. The campaign is based on a simple adage that the trucking industry has used for decades to remind drivers to do just that – get out and look, when backing or maneuvering their vehicles in tight spots.

At the 2025 Risk Managers Forum, City of Manassas Safety Coordinator Jeff Stephens mentioned using this phrase to their drivers, and an idea took hold.

“When Jeff mentioned using GOAL as an adage, it resonated with us as something we could expand on,” said Bullock. “We decided to take this idea and run with it – expanding it to six areas of emphasis based on feedback from our members.”

The campaign launched with an emphasis on six areas: automobile, buildings, documents, equipment, facilities, and job sites.

In the fall, VRSA safety consultants shared the How to GOAL: A VRSA Field Guide video, providing tips and advice on getting out to look in each of the six major GOAL categories. This was followed in the winter edition by a spotlight on Hanover County and Hanover County Public Schools and how they were implementing the campaign.

“I thought the program was a very good way to get people to think about the risks and hazards they encounter in the workplace every day,” said Safety and Risk Manager for Hanover County and Hanover County Public Schools, Matt Phillips. “One of the things we talk about with employees is to look at the workplace like it’s the first time – what has changed overnight, what has changed over time, what hazards could have possibly been introduced – and I think this is an excellent tool to help reinforce that message.”

This spring, VRSA safety consultants were at it again, sharing another video on how to Get Out and Look in the spring to recover from the effects of winter and prepare for the spring and summer seasons.

Whether it’s getting out of an automobile to look before maneuvering, conducting self-inspections, checking equipment, taking a look at playgrounds and sidewalks, or reviewing policies and conducting HR audits, the campaign is focused on increasing awareness of risks and encouraging employees to take action.
