Services Spotlight: Public Safety

For nearly 10 years, VRSA Public Safety Specialist Gary Dillon has been providing consulting and assistance to not only members in law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services, but to all members interested in maintaining safe spaces for citizens and staff.

Dillon provides Below 100 training to a meeting held by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police

This includes on-site risk assessments where Dillon provides guidance on how to keep their facilities safe, as well as training on preparing for active shooters. As a former police officer, Dillon also focuses on providing training to law enforcement, including Below 100, designed to reduce line-of-duty deaths; and Emergency Vehicle Operations and Liability (EVOLve), designed to reduce motor vehicle incidents.

Public Safety Specialist Gary Dillon provided First Amendment Audit Preparedness for the Virginia Juvenile Detention Association in Harrisonburg.

Recently, Dillon presented Below 100 training for staff at the Goochland County Emergency Operations Center on March 25. He has a second session scheduled for April 22, with both sessions awarding four hours of Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in-service credits. Dillon frequently provides training aides to members, including Roll Call Mattersa set of short training slides that can be presented at morning roll call on various topics, including: Duty to Intervene, Effective Force, Passenger Side Approaches, and the Mitigation Zone, No Such Thing as Routine, and more.

Dillon’s experience includes his work as deputy chief of police for the Warrenton Police Department, as well as an officer with the Town of Orange Police Department, the Town of West Point Police Department, the City of Charlottesville Police Department, and DCJS.

In his free time, Dillon serves as the chief of the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department and as a podcaster! His podcast, In The Line of Fire with Gary Dillon, features interviews with public safety professionals on a variety of topics. Recent episodes include a conversation with Executive Director Dana Schrad with the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, retired Chief A.J. Panebianco with the Town of Middleburg, Chief John Clair with the Town of Blacksburg, and an episode featuring a cold case from Fauquier County, Virginia.
