VML Insurance Programs distributes $250,000 in risk management grants to members

Press Release, Jan. 3, 2013:

Each year VML Insurance Programs (VMLIP) distributes Risk Management Grants to members for use in purchasing equipment or training to expand their risk management programs. This year VMLIP distributed $250,000 in grants to more than 70 governmental entities.

“We began the Risk Management Grants program more than ten years ago with $10,000 available as matching grants,” said VML Insurance Programs Managing Director Steve Craig.

“With the recession hitting local government budgets particularly hard we changed the program in 2010 by removing the match requirement and we have continued to increase the funding amount each year.”

The funds are available to members who apply and outline the risk management need as it relates to coverage purchased through VMLIP. The Risk Management Grants have been used in the past to purchase law enforcement body cameras, work zone safety equipment, confined space monitors and blowers, lightning strike detectors, low-head dam signage and more.

“As local government budgets continue to see cuts the purchase of much-needed safety equipment is often delayed,” says VMLIP Director of Safety Services Beth Rosenthal. “This program is designed to help them keep current with these vital purchases even in tough economic times so that they can continue to focus on the safety of their employees and citizens.”

Eligibility for grant funds is based on the member’s annual premium and coverage choices.

Over the past 10 years VML Insurance Programs has provided more than $1 million in grant funding. This year’s grant recipients and amounts are listed below, and include several Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), a confined space gas entry meter, ballistic shields, playground equipment and parts, and much more.
