Spotsylvania County Schools focus on slips, trips and falls prevention

Spotsylvania County Schools take preventing slips, trips, and falls seriously. Several years ago, the school system partnered with VMLIP to produce a Slips, Trips and Falls for Schools training video, available in the VMLIP Multimedia Library.

Recently, the Spotsylvania County Schools’ Safety Focus Group conducted additional training on preventing slips, trips and falls presented by VMLIP Senior Safety Consultant Fonda Craig.

“As the leading cause of incidents in schools, Spotsylvania has focused a lot of their risk management efforts on preventing slips, trips and falls,” said Craig.

Previously, Spotsylvania has purchased stepstools and ladders for their classrooms to discourage teachers from standing on desks or chairs. They have also utilized VMLIP grant funds to purchase safer floor mats for the cafeteria, lights for the parking lot, as well as wet floor warning signage.

At the most recent training, Craig provided more than 75 pairs of Yaktrax to staff responsible for clearing walkways and parking lots. Yaktrax are lightweight ice grips worn over regular walking shoes to prevent falls in icy conditions.

“Our goal is to provide the members with training and tools – such as the Yaktrax – to help prevent injuries by slips, trips and falls in the future, especially in wintery conditions,” said Craig.
