Peter Stephenson, longtime VMLIP Members’ Supervisory Board member, to retire

Peter Stephenson, longtime VMLIP Member’s Supervisory Board member, will retire this June.

Stephenson joined the board in 2007. Throughout his 10+ years with VMLIP, he has seen a lot of growth and change in the pool.

Stephenson has served as the Town of Smithfield Town Manager since 1996. Previously, he served as deputy town manager and principal planner for the Town of Leesburg, and in planning roles with James City County and the City of Charlottesville.

“Throughout my time on the board we have consistently engaged in strategic planning and looked for ways to provide value-added services and benefits to our members, many of whom have limited staff resources, while keeping rates low,” said Stephenson. “For example, merging the workers’ compensation and liability pools produced greater efficiencies and more financial stability for the organization.”

Stephenson served as VMLIP Members’ Supervisory Board Chair from 2010 – 2012.

“Peter has played a vital role in the growth and direction VMLIP has taken over the last ten years,” said VMLIP Managing Director Steve Craig.

“As a member of the board and during his time as board chair, he has engrossed himself in understanding insurance pooling and applied his experience and knowledge toward bettering the pool for all of our members. His contributions to the board will be missed; however, we wish him the best in retirement.”

Throughout his career, Stephenson has been active not only with VMLIP, but with the Virginia Local Government Management Association, serving in many leadership roles on the board as well as president, and volunteering on the board of the Virginia Downtown Development Association.

Personally, Stephenson has volunteered for the Smithfield Kiwanis Club, the Capital District Kiwanis, Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, the Smithfield High School Golf Team, and with the Loudoun Credit Union.

He plans to remain engaged in the community in retirement.

“I would like to find something I am passionate about, that will allow me to be of service to others utilizing my 32 years of local government experience.”
