Local governments and entities save taxpayer money on insurance premiums by focusing on risk management – VML Insurance Programs highlights those receiving 5 percent credit on insurance premiums

Richmond, VA – 92 member entities of VML Insurance Programs (VMLIP) have saved more than $1.1 million through insurance premium credits by focusing on risk management and increasing safety for citizens and staff in their communities.

VMLIP, which provides automobile, property, liability and workers’ compensation coverage for Virginia governmental entities, provides the premium credit to members who score 100 percent on the Risk Management Guidelines (RMG) assessment. The RMG reviews members’ risk management initiatives, claims management, fleet safety, self-inspections, training attendance, safety awareness, and more.

Members scoring 100 percent on the RMG receive a 5 percent credit on their premium.

“Our goal is not just to provide insurance coverage to our members, but to also help them create safer communities in which to live, work and learn,” said Steve Craig, managing director of VMLIP.  “We provide members with free training and a variety of safety resources to help them develop their risk management programs, and the premium credit is just one way we incentivize them to strengthen those programs.”

Strengthened risk management programs are a win-win for localities – resulting in safer communities, fewer injuries and, for this year’s recipients, lower insurance premiums.

“Our members are still working with decreased budgets, and we know that offering a credit such as this is one way to help them save in the area of insurance premiums,” said Craig.
