This practical full-day course is designed for officers and others in the field and focuses on applying the “Four Elements of Reasonable Force” which are force knowledge, skills, decision-making, and documentation. This course provides:

  • a comprehensive review of force justification and critical skills to address passive (defensive), active (offensive), and deadly resistance;
  • de-escalation skills practice as well as a duty to intervene, and Reasonable Force decision-making processes are provided with practical exercises;
  • a documentation process that systematically ensures critical detail and clarity; and
  • officers the ability to assess their current use of force risk and how to improve it whether it is one or more of the Four Elements of Reasonable Force.

This course includes both classroom and practical exercises.

VRSA will be offering up to 7 hours of DCJS in-service career development credit for this course.
